Vacancy - Trumpet, The Kansas City Jazz Orchestra
The Kansas City Jazz Orchestra is an internationally acclaimed, premier performing arts icon providing jazz entertainment and education. Through performances and educational programs, The Kansas City Jazz Orchestra preserves the rich heritage of jazz, nurtures its growth, and encourages its appreciation as an art form for all ages. Founded in 2003 by Jim Mair, Mary Mair, and Gene Hall, the 17 piece big band was composed of some of the finest musicians from the Kansas City area. The band was first directed by Mair, then by Kerry Strayer, a brilliant bandleader and arranger who served in that capacity until 2013. Strayer then passed the baton to trumpeter and arranger Clint Ashlock. In the years since its inception, The Kansas City Jazz Orchestra has established itself as a shining figure in the Kansas City arts scene with its subscription series at the world-renowned Kauffman Center for the Performing arts, as well as representing KC’s big band sound at the Hannover, Germany jazz festival, Szczecin Poland, and venues closer to home.

A typical KCJO year (September – August) consists of four (4) season concerts, each with two (2) rehearsals, plus 4-10 run-out concerts. Additional duties include playing in small groups, participating in educational opportunities, and other potential avenues.
Vacancy - Multiple, Riff Generation
Riff Generation – A new ensemble cultivated to express new music imbued with the improvisational spirit of Kansas City’s great jazz heritage. Built upon the foundation of the group being a sum of its individual, idiosyncratic parts, this medium-sized band creates contemporary jazz tunes informed by the stylistic tenets developed over the history of the music here in Kansas City. The riff – a short, memorable phrase that can be layered and developed as a melody or accompanimental figure – has served as a main component in KC jazz for a century, and provides the inspiration of this ensemble’s character. Each player is able to express their strengths as an improvisational personality while cultivating a rich and tightly-knit group texture, as a present-day extension of Kansas City’s musical identity.
Main duties will include rehearsals and performances with Riff Generation. A typical concert year consists of four (4) season concerts, each with two (2) rehearsals, plus a number of run-out concerts or gigs per year. Additional duties include recording video and audio, participating in educational opportunities, and other potential avenues.
