The spectacular genius of Mary Lou Williams - a composer, band leader, and instrumentalist during the foundational era of jazz in Kansas City - has been an incalculable influence on the development of the genre. Mary Lou, in the company of greats like Benny Moten, Count Basie, and Charlie Parker, has helped put a pin in the map to mark our midwestern city as the only UNESCO City of Music in the United States.

Join the musicians of the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra for an engaging virtual experience featuring one of Mary Lou’s most iconic pieces, the Zodiac Suite. Through a special arrangement of the work for KCJO by Artistic Director Clint Ashlock, this multifaceted performance will highlight members of the orchestra based on their astrological signs. Grab your favorite drink and settle in to get a taste of the brilliance of Mary Lou Williams, brought to you by your Kansas City Jazz Orchestra!

Registration for this event is FREE, however, any contribution you make will be generously matched by benefactors Mike and Karen Herman and Benny Lee, who have pledged a challenge grant totaling $20,000. Please consider donating to help us meet this match by May 6!

From backstage access at KCJO concerts to poolside soirees, our auction offers unique experiences that you won't find elsewhere. The auction will open on Monday, May 3 at 10am and close at the conclusion of the virtual concert on May 6.
