The Kansas City jazz scene is best described as a family. We work together constantly, we have fun together, we fight with each other on occasion, but most importantly, we love each other dearly. Once in a while something comes up that needs the family to come together more than usual, and we're at the precipice of one of those moments.
Our dear friend, stagemate, compatriot, sister, Molly Hammer, is in a fight for her life. You know her as a stunning vocalist who has continued performing throughout her battle with breast cancer, Molly's fierce determination has inspired us all, and set in action the musicians and supporters to create a benefit event on Sunday, July 14th, at Mod Gallery in the Crossroads. Our goal is to raise $10,000 by the end of the night. It's lofty, but if Molly has taught us anything, it's to dare to do the impossible.
At Mod gallery space in the Crossroads, this event will feature nine bands, a jam session and a silent auction, this is sure to be an event to remember. Some of KC's best have volunteered their time for the cause - Chris Hazelton's Boogaloo 7, Sons of Brasil, Brad Gregory Sextet featuring Kelley Gant, our own Kansas City Jazz Orchestra, Alyssa Murray, The Project H, the Deshtet featuring Kadesh Flow and Mark Lowrey - and the event will be headlined at 8pm by Texas' own For Now featuring another outstanding female vocalist, Isabel Crespo. Suggested minimum donation of $10 at the door (more is always welcome). This event is all ages.
The silent auction will run from 4pm to 7:30pm (you must be present to claim your winning bid) and will feature items such as a donated private performance from the Brad Gregory Sextet, framed jazz photographs and posters, gift baskets and gift cards galore with more to be announced. A GoFundMe campaign will be released shortly for those who can't make it in person. Bar catering will be provided by La Bodega.
